12. Gas Cutting

12. Gas Cutting

The process consists of preheating the metal to be cut to its ignition (oxidation) temperature, i.e., above 870°C in case of steel.

The preheating is done by oxy- acetylene gas flame, which is supplied from surrounding openings of the cutting torch. When this temperature is attained, a jet of high pressure oxygen from a central opening of the cutting torch is directed on the red hot metal.

Hazard Category Hazards Controls
Fire hazards or Explosion 1. Can occur by the ignition of combustible materials or by gas leak.

2. Slip/Trip damage hose could cause leak/fire.

3. Fire from an ignition source during hot work:

1. Have a suitable fire extinguisher available close to the work face during hot work with visibility vest.

2. Make sure before commence the activity removed all combustible materials and secured the area with fire blanket

3. Install Fire Arrester on the gas cylinder regulator.

4. Ensure uncoiled hoses will no be a tripping hazard.

5. Ensure there are no leak, cracks or damage to hoses.

6. Ensure all torch valves are closed and inspect for possible leaks.

7. Hot work to be done where possible away from the potential fuel source.

8. Use partitions to restrict and localize the ignition source.

9. Work strictly in accordance with hot work permit conditions.

Housekeeping 1. Slip, Trip, Fall 1. All materials, tools & equipments shall be stored in tidy manner & the site/work shop

2. should be cleaned as the work progress.

Personnel Injury 1. Can occur by persons who doesn’t comply with eTEC policy or procedures.

2. Persons do not recognize the hazard on around work place or shop place.

1. Required minimun PPE’s welders cap, googles, oxygen fed resperatory if required, face shield, leather gloves, apron, leggings.

2. Personal protective equipment (PPE) shall be worn at all times.

Personnel Injuries 1. Gas inhalation, unconsciousness, or death.

2. Storage of gas cylinder

1. Monitoring freeqency will be depends upon pattern of the work.

2. Keep separate storage for filled and empty cylinders.

3. keep cylinders always upright position tied up with chains and under secured well ventilated shed

4. Do not roll the cylinders

5. Do not lift cylinders by means of slings, chains or ropes

6. Keep 20 ft distance between storage of flammable gas and oxygen cylinders.
