The Margaret River is home to the critically endangered hairy marron, found nowhere else in the world.

Hairy marron have declined drastically in number, mainly due to the accidental introduction of smooth marron, which are common throughout other south west rivers and dams.

The Margaret River, including all its tributaries upstream of Ten Mile Brook Juncthion, has been closed to all marroning in order to protect the hairy marron.
