BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Office safety is just as important as Site Safety. There are many hazards awaiting the unwary ranging from Manual Handling to Hazardous Substances. 


HAZARDS

  • Accumulations of flammable material ie paper
  • Tripping hazards such as cables operations such as moving cabinets etc.
  • Manual handling causing strains or sprains
  • Poorly organized work stations
  • Hazardous substances damaging health

HEALTH AND SAFETY POINTS

  • Learn the Fire Drill know your Fire Wardens and what extinguishers are abailable along with their limitations
  • Do not obstruct fire exits or access to extinguishers
  • Do not overfill filing cabinets. Only pull out one drawer at a time
  • Do not run down corridors – walk
  • Remove trip hazards such as cables, leads and worn carpets
  • Throw waste paper in the bins not on the floor
  • Never overload electrical sockets
  • Observe the AMEC smoking policy and obey No Smoking signs. Do not smoke in a room where non-smokers are present
  • Extinguish cigarettes in the ashtrays provided. Do not empty hot ashtrays into waste paper bins
  • Use equipment as the manufacturer intends
  • Think before moving equipment around – use trolley or correct Manual Handling techniques
  • Do not stand on chairs or furniture to reach high shelves
  • If you use a computer take a break away from the screen for at least 10 minutes in every hour
  • Make sure that you have been trained on the COSHH assessment for any harmful substance that you are required to use
  • Learn who your First Aiders are and what to do if you have an accident
