· Collapse of excavation sides.
· Materials falling onto persons in the excavation.
· People and vehicles falling into the excavation.
· Undermining nearby structures.
· Striking underground services.
· Hazardous atmosphere in the excavation.
· Flooding of excavation etc.
· Keep vehicles away from the excavation with barriers, timber baulks etc.
· Ensure that there are adequate barriers/notices/warning lights in place.
· Use well anchored stops-blocks for dumpers, tipping wagons depositing fill material into an excavation.
· Only withdraw supports from a position of safety eg above ground or from supported ground.
· Give machine operators the best positive vision of work in progress.
· Mark, protect and support services exposed in excavation.
· The excavation must be inspected by a competent person before the start of each shift.
· Ensure that a record of all examinations is recorded in a the register and signed by a competent
person.

토목공사에 분류되는 터파기, 흙막이, 줄파기 등의 많은 사고사례를 뉴스나 다른 매체를 통해 쉽게 접하실 수 있습니다.
토목공사는 대부분 공사를 진행하는 초기공사로서 인프라가 부족한 상황이 많고, 중장비를 이용하여 작업을 하다보니 Management, 운전자 실수 등의 많은 사고 원인이 찾을 수 있습니다.
제가 생각하는 토목공사의 중요성은 Plan 입니다. 부족한 공사 인프라, 맨땅에 헤딩한다고 하죠!! 이렇게 시작하다보니 토목공사 담당자의 역할 및 능력이 매우 중요합니다. 물론 안전관리자의 역할이 뒷받침 되어야 하죠!
그 다음은 중장비 운전원의 안전의식입니다. 지중매설물이 파손, 자재 파손, 장비 전도 등의 원인이 될 수 있는 운전원의 실수를 사전에 막고자 경각심과 주의를 갖어야 합니다. 기술자는 충분한 토목공사 관련 정보를 습득 및 검토해야 하구요.
지금까지 제가 만난 토목공사 담당자분들은 유능하고 성실하고 세심한 분들이라, 행운이라고 생각합니다. 도로공사로 차량이 막힌다고 불평하지 마세요. 우리가 사용하는 지하철, 고속도로, 철도, 지하주차장 등 눈에 잘 보이지 않지만 모두 그분들의 노고로 만들어진 것들 입니다.
기초가 튼튼해야 모든게 제대로 서 있을 수 있죠!
