35. Operating Tube Profiling Machine

The tube profiling machines is extremely important that everyone remembers the proper safety rules while operating the machines.
This will be a rundown of the basic safety rules that should be followed while working with or around a tube profiling machine. The first general rules for tube profiling machine operation are
You should never work with a tube profiling machine without the proper training or the correct operator’s manual

The machines are built with the proper safety devices in place. These may include guards and other protective devices, it is important that these safety devices are firmly fitted in place at all times while the machine is in use. Some of these safety devices may include:

An Emergency Stop Button
The emergency stop button is used to shut down the machine instantly. This button is located on the handheld unit, the control panel, and other places on the machine.

A Soundproof Casing
The soundproof casing reduces the noise emitted by the operating section of the machine. It also protects the machine operator from the risk of flying tool fragments and any other flying objects.

The Curtain Guards
The curtain guards are made out of PVC. These are designed to shield the machine operator from the risk of tool fragments or airborne chips.

The Guard Fence
This part marks the maximum working area of the machine. This fence keeps the machine operator away from any moving parts.

The Contact Mats
The operator uses this control to stop the CNC machine instantly. When he or she stands on the mat the machine stops instantly. This protects the operator from the moving parts.

Hazard Category Hazards Controls
Eye injuries 1. This is a serious hazard present when operating rotational machinery.

2. It must be remembered that “The eye is not only inreplaceable but is also the softest opint of entry to the brain”.

1. Protective guards shall be in both before and during the rotational machinery operation.

2. Full eye/face protection shall be worn at all times by the rotational machinery operation.

3. The company operates a mandatory eye protection policy glasses shall be worn by all personnel at all times.

Entanglement of Clothing 1. Major injuries are caused when clothing, etc. is caught in moving parts of machinery. The operator uneasily be pulled into the machinery resulting in fractured, broken or amputated limbs, even death.  1. Loose clothings shall never be worn when operating the rotational machinery. Protruding jewelry shall be removed and long hair tied back to prevent entanglement.

2. Emergency kick bar shall be tested periodically by the operator (Before each use if possible) to ensure that it is working. Any deficiencies in the kick bar shall be reported to your supervisor immediately.

3. Personnel shall never lean over the work piece while it is in motion.

4. Chuck guards shall be in place before using the rotational machinery.

5. Only trained personnel shall use the rotational machinery.

Laceration from Swarf 1. Swarf ejected from moving parts of machinery can cause nasty lacerations to the face, hands and arms.  1. PPE shall be worn at all times when operating machinery, i.e. face shield. cover alls and cut resistant gloves (if required)

2. Operators shall wear additional chainmail gloves when cleaning swarf from the machinery and use the tools provided to put the swarf into the scrap bins (i.e. fork)

3. All cuts and abrations shall be treated by a first aider immediately to ensure that they do not become infected.

Back Injuries 1. Caused by manual handling, etc. 1. Mechanical handling shall be utilised wherever possible.

2. Operators shall obtain assistance from other personnel when handling heavy items to prevent injuries.

3. Training shall be given on manual handling techniques. (where necessary)

Inadequate Lighting 1. Inadequate or flickering lighting can result in a stroboscopic effect on the machinery spindle making it look stationary when it is really in motion.  1. Personnel shall report any defect concerning lighting to their supervisor immediately, who will implement maintenance measures prior to work commencing or continuing. 2. Personnel shall never assume that the spindle is motionless. Press the stop buton if unsure.

3. Personnel shall never lean over the work piece while it is in motion.
